Learn to create award winning carvings with World Champion and professional carvers at the 2017 Educational Conference. A full menu of 2-day, 3-day, and 4-day classes will be offered by the Education Department in conjunction with the Ward World Championship. Classes are offered prior to the competition in various locations throughout Ocean City, MD, starting Monday, April 24th, and continuing through Thursday, April 27th. Here is a preview of the exciting offerings that will be available during the conference.

4-DAY Classes: Monday through Thursday, April 24 - 27, 2017

$450 Member; $500 Non-Member

Laurie Truehart: Carve and Paint a Screech Owl, Red or Gray Phase - Beginner friendly, intermediate and advanced welcome. Oil painting, mostly hand-tool carving (power carving also welcome) with micro-motor detailing. Carve and paint a fully detailed life-size screech owl with Laurie and Mike Truehart. Students may choose to paint either a Red phase or Gray phase bird. Both color schemes will be taught. The instructors will provide reference material, blanks, paint, and some tools. REGISTER

Jerry Painter: Carve and Paint a Miniature Meadowlark - Beginner, intermediate, advanced all welcome. Power carving, bring your own tools, a materials list will be available. Learn how to carve a miniature Western Meadowlark (about 4.5x4.5x7.5 inches) on fence posts made of Tupelo. The Long-Head Cone Flowers are brass and so is the barb wire. Acrylic paint, students can choose if they want to carve an open or closed mouth bird. REGISTER

3-DAY Classes: Tuesday through Thursday, April 25 - 27, 2017

Rich & Ross Smoker: Carve and Paint a 1936 Ward Bros. Canvasback – Beginner to advanced, micro-motor or hand tool carving. Starting with a western red cedar cutout from a telephone pole, the same as Lem and Steve did back in the day, join Rich and Ross Smoker to carve, paint, and finish a Ward Brothers Trademark 1936 style canvasback. You will carve the body and the head, then eyes obtained from the same maker as back then will adorn your canvasback's head. This coupled with a faux white lead texture and oil paints modified to express age, will finish this iconic decoy. REGISTER
 

2-DAY Classes: Wednesday through Thursday, April 26 - 27, 2017

$250 Member; $300 Non-Member

Jeff Rechin - Carving and Painting a Realistic Feather - Beginner to Advanced - Participants are invited to join Jeff Rechin in a feather carving, texturing, and painting class. Students will follow along with the instructor as he guides them on developing a lifelike feather, and then examine and explore other feather types and techniques based on examples provided by the instructor. Each student will be given an almost finished blank which they will texture using  power tools, wood burners, and light sanding, then they will learn sophisticated acrylic painting techniques for realism. 1-DAY Classes: Sunday, April 30, 2017

$80 Member; $100 Non-Member -  10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Ross Smoker - Carving for Beginners, Carve a Minature (unpainted) Shorebird: Ross Smoker leads a class in basic carving techniques to create a minature shorebird. Participants will finish class with an unpainted shorebird.Tools and materials provided. REGISTER

Pre-registration is required for all classes. Deposit payments are due by Friday, March 10th, 2017.

 

 

Please Note: Conference pricing does not include admission into the competition hall or admission to the Ward Museum. Pre-registration is required for all classes, workshops and lectures. All classes are subject to cancellation before April 1, 2017. Adult and Youth lectures are on a first come, first serve basis. Workshop and lecture balances are due at registration. Member prices are for current Ward Museum Members only. Youth under the age of 18 receive FREE admission to lectures and workshops. Lectures and workshops subject to cancellation without notification. Refunds honored in full upon administrative cancellation of classes/lectures/workshops.
