World Education Conference

Learn to create award-winning carvings with World Champion and professional carvers at the 2013 Educational Conference. A full menu of 3-day and 2-day classes are offered by the Education Department in conjunction with the Ward World Championship. Classes take place prior to the competition in various locations throughout Ocean City, MD starting Monday, April 22nd and ending on Thursday, April 25th. Students enrolled in these classes receive 2 free passes to the show for the weekend!

4-DAY: Monday through Thursday, April 22 - 25, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

 

Bob Guge: Carve and Paint a Baltimore Oriole
Comfort Inn Gold Coast
$450 Members, $500 Non-Members
Use power tools, texturing and acrylic paint to create a Baltimore Oriole with Bob Guge. The emphasis of this class is carving and painting. This bird was chosen by popular demand. You will have the choice of painting a male or female or both depending on time. This class fills fast, early registration is recommended. Materials list here.

Ward Brothers Green-winged Teals

Rich & Ross Smoker: Carve and Paint a Ward Brothers Style Green-winged Teal Hen
Princess Bayside Beach Hotel
$350 Members, $400 Non-members
Join Rich & Ross for an exciting three days of carving and painting. The brothers will use both traditional tools and power tools to carve and paint with oils to reveal a 75-year-old finish. All aspects of this project will be described and instructed. Attend this class to learn why the Smoker brothers say, "carving should be both fun and instructional." Rich Smoker is a Ward Museum Board of Directors member and the 2008 Shooting Rig World Champion. Materials list here.

   
American Kestrel

Jeff Rechin: Paint an American Kestrel
Princess Bayside Beach Hotel
$350 Members, $400 Non-members
Paint a life-size cast of an original American Kestrel carving by two time world champion Jeff Rechin using acrylics. The course will cover color mixing, the use of washes, shading and highlighting. Special attention will be paid to feather highlights, shadowing and color tone layouts unique to this falcon. Painting methods will include paint from light to dark as well as dark tones back to light of feather edges. Refining detail will finish this project. Materials list here.

Thomas Horn: Create a Lady Slipper Orchid

Explore techniques to make lifelike habitats for your wildlife sculptures in this two-day class. Learn metal forming techniques to create this North American orchid. Forge leaves and petals from brass, paint and discuss ways to incorporate life like habitats effectively into your work. Materials list here.

Please Note: Conference pricing does not include admission into the competition hall or admission to the Ward Museum. Pre-registration is required for all classes, fieldtrips and seminars. All classes are subject to cancelation before April 5th, 2013. Adult and Youth Seminars are on a first come, first serve basis. Seminar and fieldtrip balances are due at registration. Member prices are for current Ward Museum Members only. Youth under the age of 18 receive FREE admission to seminars. Seminars subject to cancelation without notification. Refunds honored in full upon administrative cancelation of classes/seminars/fieldtrips.
