Ralph Johnston (dates unknown) Detroit, MI

Ralph Johnston was a pattern maker by trade, but also carved some seven thousand decoys for commercial sale and use (Engers 218). Johnston owned a commercial-size band saw and did quite a bit of work on bodies for the Schmidt family carvers. The black duck and goose decoys Johnston carved himself are considered above average by collectors. Unfortunately, Johnston never did achieve the wide-spread popularity enjoyed by Ben Schmidt.
